This was the site of an ancient parish church that was rebuilt in the 18th century.  It stands on what is traditionally held to be the site of the prison in which St Gregory of Spoleto was confined before his martyrdom in 303 AD.

The wall behind the ex-church contains blocks tht came from a Roman structure here.  The window at ground level looks down on a Roman passage that extends under the church, which Giuseppe Sordini excavated in 1906.
