The history of this tiny chapel at the summit of Colle Ciciano used to be summarised in an inscription (17th century) on its facade:
S MICHAELI ARCHANGELO
POST CONSULATUM FELICIS ET TAURI
ANNO VERO SAL. HUM. CCCCXXVIII
HOC TEMPLUM DICATUM
[The blanks space survives above the portal. Where is the inscription now?]
This inscription, which probably reproduced an ancient one, records the construction of the first chapel in 428 AD, the year of the consuls Flavius Constantius Felix and Flavius Taurus.
This might have been the site of the baptistery that St Senzius established in the 5th century at the place in which he killed a dragon.
