Social Wars (ca. 90 BC)

The allied cities of Umbria became a municipia after the Social Wars, with magistrates who were elected annually.  They were supported by a local senate made up of 100 decuriones.

  1. Larger municipia had four magistrates:

  2. The quattuorviri iure dicundo were responsible for civic administration and justice, and could commission public works.  Those elected every fifth year were known as quattuorviri quinquennales because they also supervised the taking of the five-yearly census.

  3. The quattuorviri aedilicia potestate (or aediles) were responsible for the food supply and managed the construction of roads and public buildings.

  4. Smaller municipia had only two magistrates, the duuoviri.
