Paolo Brizi in: Perugia

Paolo Brizi, who was born in Fano, possibly trained in Rome.  He was called to Perugia in 1735 to work at San Filippo Neri (see below), and subsequently established a career here.  He specialised in decorative frescoes, and often worked in association with figurative artists.

Frescoes in San Filippo Neri (1735-7)

As noted above, Paolo Brizi was called to Perugia to work at San Filippo Neri.  Specifically, he executed the decorative chiaroscuro frames for the frescoes in the arches above two chapels in the church:

Cappella di San Filippo (1735)

The frescoes in the arch above the Cappella di San Filippo (in the right transept), which are by the ageing Giacinto Boccanera, are set in decorative chiaroscuro frames by Paolo Brizi.   The fresco at the centre depicts angels with symbols of the Virtues, while those to the sides depict scenes from the Old Testament:

  1. Elijah and the widow of Zarephath; and

  2. Jeremiah contemplating a phoenix, which prefigures the resurrection of Christ.

Cappella del Crocifisso

The frescoes in the arch above the Cappella di San Filippo (in the right transept), which are by Sebastiano Ceccarini of Urbino, are set in decorative chiaroscuro frames by Paolo Brizi.   The fresco at the centre depicts angels carrying the instruments of the Passion, while those to the sides depict scenes from the Old Testament:

  1. Samson killing a lion; and

  2. Cain killing Abel.

Frescoes (1748)

Paolo Brizi and Francesco Appiani executed these frescoes in a room in Palazzo dei Priori that is now the “anticamera del sindaco” (vestibule of the office of the Mayor).

Frescoes (mid 18th century)

These frescoes in the the Sala dei Quattro Elementi of Palazzo Baldeschi Cennini are attributed to Paolo Brizi.  The central motif depicts a woman flying through the air, carrying flowers to represent the earth.  She is accompanied by two putti, one carrying an amphora of water and the other carrying a torch (fire).  The scheme includes the arms of Cardinal Federico Baldeschi Colonna (died 1691).

Frescoes in the Oratorio di Sant’ Anna (1752)

These distinctive frescoes cover the ceiling and walls of the oratory, which belonged to the adjacent Conservatorio delle Derelitte.  The scenes in tondi depict:
  1. St Anne in glory;

  2. the Coronation of the Virgin; and

  3. allegories of virtues.

Frescoes (ca. 1761)

These frescoes in the vaults of the newly restored church of the Monastero della Beata Colomba in Corso Cavour are by Francesco Appiani and Paolo Brizi.

Library Ceiling at Monteripido (1773)

Paolo Brizi apparently decorated the beamed and brick ceiling of the library of the Convento di Monteripido.  It was probably while working here that Brizi contracted the malaria that was to prove fatal.
