San Faustino

Benedictine abbey

First documented in 1104 as a possession of the Abbazia di Farfa

Stands on the presumed burial site of St Faustinus.

Stands on the presumed burial site of St Felix,

Relics of St Felix were  probably translated to San Felice di Giano  when Civitas Martana was destroyed, probably in the 6th century.

Sant’ Illuminata

(1037)


Ancient Benedictine abbey  outside Massa Martana

Stands on the presumed burial site of St Illuminata

Camaldolese monks from Sant' Apollinare, Ravenna built the present church.

 

Santa Maria della Pace (1521-89)


Built by  Commune, just outside the walls of Massa Martana, to house a venerated fresco of the Madonna and Child. 

Completed by Franciscan tertiaries, who built an adjoining convent.

 

Santa Maria in Pantano (7th or 8th century)


One of the oldest Umbrian churches, probably adapted from a late imperial building 

Stands on the site of Vicus ad Martis Tudertium, a way station on the old Via Flaminia 

Named for the swamp that developed here when the settlement was abandoned. 

10th century - Benedictine monks reclaimed the site and built the adjacent monastery. 

1118  - Passed to the Abbazia di Farfa
