Key to Umbria: Bevagna

The Congregation of the Oratory of St Philip Neri was first established at Bevagna in 1720 outside Porta Foligno.  The present church was built in 1725 to the right of the Chiesa della Madonna della Provvidenza, which still survives to the left.   The venerated image that gave its name to this earlier church and the equally venerated statue of the Madonna Addolorata that replaced it are now both in San Filippo Neri.

Interior

The interior of San Filippo is decorated in white Baroque stucco.

Frescoes in the vaults (1757)

These frescoes, which are by Domenico Valeri, depict St Philip Neri in glory; the Assumption of the Virgin (illustrated here); and a series of allegorical personifications.

Art from the Church

SS Charles Borromeo and Philip Neri (17th century)

This altarpiece, which is attributed to Andrea Camassei, passed from the church of San Filippo Neri to the Commune in or shortly before 1880.  It is now in the Pinacoteca
